Built-Up Roofing:

Built up roofing systems, often referred to as BUR, have been used in the U.S. for over 100 years. These systems are a comprised of a reliable waterproof membrane that is fabricated with layers of bitumen alternated with reinforcing felts. Commonly referred to as “tar and gravel” roofs, built-up systems redundant layers give it exceptional resistance to water and weather. These roofs are easy to repair if damaged.

The bitumen typically used in built-up roof systems is asphalt, coal tar or cold-applied adhesive. The asphalt or coal tar is heated in a kettle or tanker and then applied by mop or mechanical spreader. Built-up roof surfacing materials can be coated with paint or other reflective materials to reduce the effects of UV radiation, thereby reducing heating and cooling costs.

There are options for built-up roof surfaces that include aggregate, such as gravel, slag or mineral granules, as well as glass-fiber or mineral surfaced cap sheets. Other options are hot asphalt mopped over the entire surface, aluminum coatings or elastomeric coatings.

They do not rot in wet climates and are not susceptible to destruction by pests. They can be used in any climate or region and can withstand the most severe weather conditions, including fire and wind. Most roof tile manufacturers offer warranties of at least 50 years.

Modified Roof Systems:

Modified roof systems are asphalt based and provide superior waterproofing characteristics. The typical life span for these systems is about 10 to 20 years. Modified Bitumen roofs are usually installed as a two ply system and are always fully adhered. These roof systems are made up of asphalt that has been modified with a polymer to create plastic or rubber like properties. The modifiers provide increased resistance to brittleness, cold temperatures and increased elasticity and strength.

The most common modifiers are APP (Atactic Polypropylene) and SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene).
